Spy Ponder Football News

Season Opener & Memorial Game

The Spy Ponders are set to kick off the highly anticipated 2024 season on September 6th at 7 p.m., facing off against the Arlington Catholic Cougars. This season, the team is led by Senior Captains Jack Zambardino, Gavin Carreiro, Henry Tassmer, and Junior Captain Brady Bekkenhuis. The Ponder's schedule includes six games at home and they will hit the road for three away games. The team has been working hard in the offseason and is ready to make its mark at the home opener on Friday.

This week's game is especially exciting as there is an intown rivalry between the AHS Spy Ponders and AC Cougars, two teams who have a deep history. The Spy Ponders not only want to start their season with a win but they are looking forward to competing in the highly competitive Middlesex League. They are determined to improve on last year's standings, with hopes to win a league title and make a playoff run.

To achieve these goals, the team has been focusing on speed, strength, football IQ and game preparedness. They’ve also emphasized the importance of communication and confidence on every play. These elements are crucial to the game, as teamwork, communication, and mental toughness are the foundation of success. Some players to keep an eye on this season include Alexi Trapotsis (WR/DB), Ori Forest (RB/LB), Dillon McGahan (LB) and Will Tassmer (OL/DL). Through the offseason the captains have taken the team under their leadership to help the team prepare for the season and create team unity.

This Friday is about more than just football; it’s a celebration of the life and legacy of John Hanley, a respected coach and dedicated Ponder. A 1959 graduate of AHS, Hanley coached football for over 50 years, 24 of those years as the head coach. Under his leadership, the Ponders won four Greater Boston League Championships and made two appearances in the Superbowl. His unwavering commitment to AHS Football earned him a place in the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. Beyond football, Hanley also made his mark coaching basketball, track and field and influencing many athletes throughout the years. Coach Hanley left a lasting impact on many including current head AHS Football Coach, Frank Roche. Speaking about his experience, Coach Roche shared, “Coach Hanley greatly impacted [him] as a player and now a coach. His dedication to Arlington Athletics is unmatched and something that generations of student-athletes got the privilege to experience. His ability to remain calm and respectful of all people while also commanding respect and leading a team is a testament to his strong values.” Hanley's impact on Arlington athletics is truly inspiring. We invite you to join us at Friday night’s game to celebrate and honor John Hanley for everything he has done for AHS Football and the town.
