Week 12
Game Recap
The Ponders had a challenging game on Thursday, losing 9-39 against Burlington. In the first, Burlington was able to get a touchdown but failed on their two-point conversion. At the end of the quarter, the Ponders drove down the field and scored a field goal, making the game 3-6 at the end of the first. In the second quarter, Burlington extended their lead with another touchdown, but Brady Bekkenhuis made a crucial play by blocking their field goal attempt. Before halftime, Kyle Gaffny powered through the defense for a three-yard touchdown run, and Bekkenhuis blocked yet another field goal, leaving the Ponders trailing 20-9 at the half. The second half began with Burlington scoring again, though Arlington’s defense stepped up to stop the two-point conversion. Manu Mahenthiran snagged an interception in the third, stopping Burlington's momentum. However, Burlington regained control in the fourth quarter, adding two more touchdowns to seal the game.
Arlington faced a tough game, dealing with multiple injuries along the offensive line, which led to three freshmen stepping up to fill those gaps. They did an excellent job getting involved in varsity action. Damien Prescott also had a great game, providing a spark at the running back position and running the ball hard. Despite their efforts, the team struggled to find consistency, highlighting the challenges of adapting to key injuries.
Looking ahead to next game
The Ponders don't have a game this week, but they’ve been focusing on what brought them success earlier in the season as they prepare for next week's Thanksgiving game against Waltham. They take on Waltham next Thursday at Leary Stadium, 10am. How they finish the season will reflect their hard work and determination, and the team is eager to step up and secure a victory. They are also making the most of the remaining time they have together as the season comes to an end.
Player Q&A
This week, I had the chance to interview junior linebacker and tight end Kyle Gaffny. Growing up, Kyle was influenced by his dad, who played a big role in his decision to take up football. Watching how much his family enjoyed football sparked his interest. Kyle began playing flag football in 4th grade and transitioned to tackle football in 8th grade.
Kyle’s favorite part of the game is the relationships he builds with his teammates and the excitement that follows a big win. One of his most memorable moments came this season during his first varsity start against Lexington, where Arlington won 50-8. Like many of his teammates, Kyle looks forward to the team tradition of singing the fight song after a win and celebrating with his teammates.
This season, Kyle has been focusing on watching a lot of film to improve his play. He analyzes how players at his position react quickly and adapt to different situations, working to apply those skills to his own game. One of Kyle's strengths is that he is very coachable and can quickly fix his mistakes. Knowing that one play could change the whole game helps Kyle stay motivated throughout the game. The most valuable lesson the coaches have taught Kyle is to give 100% effort, regardless of mistakes. Even when things go wrong, you can still make a positive impact. Kyle’s favorite part of game day is walking onto the field and seeing all his friends and family who’ve come out to support him and the team. He believes that the key to good communication is knowing and trusting your teammates, ensuring everyone is on the same page. Outside of football, Kyle plays varsity volleyball in the spring.
