Week 8

Game Recap

The Ponders had another dominating game on Friday, defeating Belmont 38-7. Arlington started strong with Ryan Scull powering through for a rushing touchdown in the first quarter. The offense caught fire in the second quarter, with a 50 yard touchdown pass to Drew Beck. This was  followed by another 40 yard touchdown pass to Beck, closing out the half with momentum. In the second half, Alexi Trapotsis caught a touchdown pass and Jack Zambardion added a rushing touchdown to close out the third quarter. The Ponders capped off their win with a field goal in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory.

The Spy Ponders showcased their skills in a dominant win over Belmont, improving to a 4-2 on the season. Drew Beck stood out on both sides of the ball, with three tackles for loss on defense and hauling in 5 catches on offense, 2 of them for touchdowns. Brady Bekkenhuis and Emile Lemire were key contributors, playing a strong game on the offensive line and nose tackle. The Ponders’ defense swarmed the ball relentlessly while the offense clicked, connecting on deep passes and protecting the football efficiently.

Looking ahead to the next game

Today, the Spy Ponders face Winchester, who also has a 4-2 record.  Winchester is coming off a narrow 28-29 loss against Reading. Last season, Arlington lost to Winchester 31-14, but this year’s Ponders look stronger than ever and are ready to take on a tough Winchester team. They are determined to win this match-up and show they can handle the challenge of a strong Winchester team in this critical mid-season matchup.

To prepare for this game, the Ponders are concentrating on cleaning up mistakes, improving their blitz pickups, and fine-tuning their adjustments to various formations. The team has been putting in the hard work needed to face Winchester and is confident they have what it takes to come out on top.

Come out and support the Spy Ponders as they take on Winchester today at 6:30 PM at Winchester High School Turf.

Player Q&A

This week, I had the opportunity to interview Niko Trapotsis, a senior wide receiver and defensive back for the Spy Ponders. Niko began his football journey in third grade, playing flag football, and moved to tackle football in seventh grade. His love for the game started in elementary school, where he played at recess and grew up watching a dominant Patriots team. His favorite part about playing football is the atmosphere of the game and the guys he gets to play alongside with.

Niko’s most memorable football moment came in his sophomore year when he got his first interception against Brookline. However, his most memorable game was last season’s hard fought win over a tough Stoneham team. One of Niko’s strengths is his football IQ, which is his ability to understand and recognize plays on both sides of the ball. This season he’s working to improve his sprint speed to elevate his game. Niko also emphasized the importance of repetition and knowing your role as a key to communication on the field.

Off the field, Niko plays basketball and lacrosse, both of which help him stay in shape for football season. He also prepared for the season by attending team lifts, and putting in extra effort to be ready for the season. This year, Niko’s goal is to help the Ponders make a strong playoff run.
