Week 11

Game Recap

The Ponders faced a challenging matchup against the #2 ranked King Philip, ultimately falling short with a 0-40 score. Despite the tough outcome, the defense made some key plays to disrupt King Philip’s rhythm. In the first quarter, Drew Beck forced a fumble, and Manu Mahenthiran got a fumble recovery off of a punt. King Philip scored 14 points in the first quarter and another 19 in the second; however Kyle Gaffny was able to stop their momentum with an interception. King Philip scored seven more points in the third, and both teams were scoreless in the fourth.

King Philip is a highly skilled team, and the Ponders missed some opportunities that might have kept the game closer. This eye-opening matchup highlighted the importance of winning regular season games to secure a stronger playoff ranking and avoid facing such top-ranked opponents early. Despite the challenge, the Ponders showed resilience, forcing two fumbles and securing an interception, proving they can create big plays even against tough teams.

Looking ahead to next game

This week, the Ponders will face off against the 7-2 Burlington team today at 6 p.m. Burlington is coming off a narrow 44-48 loss to Wayland. Arlington doesn't usually play Burlington, as they are a cross-league opponent, making it an exciting game. Burlington is a tough team that has a very strong passing game, so the Ponders have been preparing specifically to defend against their pass-heavy offense.

Come support the Ponders as they take on Burlington today at 6 in Burlington!

Player Q&A

This week, I interviewed junior Drew Beck, who plays both defensive line and tight end. Drew began playing football in 8th grade and was inspired by his father, a former college football player. For Drew, the best part of football is the bond he shares with his teammates, both on and off the field. His favorite tradition is singing the fight song with the team after a win. His most memorable moment came this season when he made his first varsity start in front of a home crowd at the season opener against his old team, AC. To prepare for game day, Drew has a pre-game ritual that includes listening to specific songs and wearing a special headband, which he doesn't wear during practice.

One of Drew’s key strengths is his size, which allows him to take up space and get off blocks pretty easily; he also has good hands, allowing him to catch and run effectively on offense. This season, Drew has been putting extra effort into improving his offensive blocking, recognizing how much this skill will benefit the team.

Drew chose to play both tight end and defensive line because he likes the physicality of these positions, and he also gets to make big plays on offense. In preparation for the season, he lifted, ran and participated in 7v7s. He emphasizes the importance of the hard work put in before the season even begins. The biggest lesson football has taught Drew is that the game isn’t over until the final whistle—a mindset he brings to every snap.
